Success Story Spotlight: Mireille Apollon

Mireille Apollon is a respected leader, educator, and public servant whose career reflects dedication, cultural openness, and a deep commitment to community development. With a background in pedagogy from Universite Laval and a masters degree in public administration from ENAP, she began her professional life as a mathematics teacher before expanding her impact internationally.

Originally from Haiti, Mireille represented Canada in several African countries, where she planned and managed major development projects in areas such as private‑sector growth, training institutions, technology transfer, and infrastructure. She also supported local initiatives that brought her close to women in rural communities, whose strength and leadership deeply inspired her.

Her work abroad allowed her to build strong relationships with local populations in countries such as Senegal, Gabon, Mali, Tunisia, Mauritania, and Burkina Faso. She witnessed firsthand the essential role women play in economic and social development through cooperatives, education, and community projects.

After retiring from the federal public service, Mireille founded her own consulting firm in international cooperation. She continues to share her expertise through conferences and collaborations with Canadian institutions, while advocating for greater participation of African women in politics and democratic processes.

In Gatineau, Mireille has been an active volunteer, contributing to cultural diversity, arts, and community engagement. Her efforts earned her several distinctions, including the Ordre de Gatineau and awards recognizing her intercultural leadership.

In 2009, she was elected municipal councillor after a first attempt the previous year.

Today, as Vice Mayor and councillor for the Orée du Parc district, she continues to serve with dedication, dialogue, and a strong commitment to building an inclusive and vibrant community.
